New Releases – July 2017

on

It’s a pretty barren month coming up. Of the slim pickings, top would be Final Fantasy XII – The Zodaic Age. It might be a remaster, but its also a version of a game many are unlikely to have played.

The original FFXII was a bold step away from traditional Final Fantasy games, but still firmly rooted in the core systems. There were a few missteps in the original release, like essentially making everyone the same class, only differentiated by what weapon they carried. The Japanese only Zodiac Job Edition release saw the addition of clear character classes, a challenge mode, new game plus and actual control over the summoned Espers. Whatever your experience with the original, Zodiac Age is well worth playing. If nothing else, they sorted out Vaan’s weird ab disease – and that’s worth the entry-price alone.

Consoles also get Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun. It’s a Commandos like RTS game that needs gratuitous use of quick save. It’s been on PC for a while and been very well received – it also handles well on controller already.

And that’s kind of it. Oh there’s Splatoon 2 out as well. I haven’t played it, but I know Splatoon was well received on Wii-U. It’s sure to do well in Switch, which is doing much better than the Wii U in terms of reception.

Now go enjoy your summer.
