New Releases – March 2017

Highlights this month include Horizon Zero Dawn (great name /s) the launch of Nintendo’s new console – the Switch, Zelda Breath of the Wild, Mass Effect Andromeda and Nier: Automata

It’s debatable if Guerrilla Studios are actually good at making games, or if Killzone 2 was just luck. Horizon: Zero Dawn might have a stupid title, but its been well received in reviews so far (as if that was an actual indicator of quality) and looks like an interesting open world game. Hopefully it has really good gameplay, because the bar for open world RPG story telling was set by Witcher 3 and is pretty damn hard to clear!

I only played through Ocarina of Time last year and started Link between Worlds recently. While I can appreciate the origin of some great game mechanics, the overall design and story left much to be desired in both. Breath of the Wild looks like a breath of fresh air, giving Link the ability to jump on demand at last and gameplay that doesn’t just focus on dungeon puzzles. It’ll be interesting to see if its presence will be enough to shift Nintendo’s new console.

I know next to nothing about Mass Effect: Andromeda. I haven’t even watched that video I just posted above. I loved the original trilogy and hopefully this manages to continue that success and not stumble like Dragon Age Inquisition (which was critically well received, but boring as hell to play)

Nier is a tough game to follow and thankfully Nier: Automata looks as wacky as its predecessor. The demo felt pretty damn solid, but there seemed to be a heavy emphasis on shooting and bullet hell gameplay, which formed only a small part of the original.
