The Gaming Month Ahead – December 2016

It’s December. There’s never really many games this time of year and that still holds true. Still, there’s a few high-profile titles coming out the right side of the black-friday mess that seemed to have impacted COD, Dishonored 2 and Titanfall 2’s sales. The long awaited cat-weasel is unleashed. The Last Guardian finally arrives. Will it live up to your expectations? can it ever? do you care? The long awaited third game from the ICo team finally delivers with huge pressure on its feathered shoulders.

The sequel to the rather excellent Shin Megami Tensei IV comes out right at the start of the month. What was thought to first be something of an expansion is pretty much a full blown sequel. SMTIV: Apocalypse takes everything from the first game, refines it and gives you more. SMT has always had a reputation of being quite difficult (I blame that damn matador) but SMTIV balances the difficulty quite well by allowing players to save anywhere. It’s nice to see more of this kind of game on 3DS, though it would be really nice to see SMT make a more graphical return at some point.

The dead rise again in Dead Rising 4. Frank West returns for another zombie smashing adventure. There’s no timer system this time around, which will probably lose it as many fans as it gets it. Seems a strange decision to not bring it to PS4, since the other games in the series are now on that platform. With the timing and the christmas theme, I can’t help but feel that they should replace the zombies with gremlins – make it more interesting.

Gravity Rush was one of Vita’s more outstanding games. I loved the look and the aesthetic, even if the gameplay didn’t really carry it through the whole game and the characters and story didn’t really live up to the setting. Gravity Rush 2 skips over the Vita this time, going straight onto PS4 and hopefully taking advantage of the extra power and sturdier controls.

And honourable mention for the cover image game – Shadow Tactics – Blade of the Shogun. It’s a great commando’s style RTS game with a lot of polish and character. There’s a demo on Steam if you want to check it out.
