The Gaming Month Ahead – August 2016

AoTitan

After a few months on a drip feed on good games, August brings a veritable harvest of must-haves. It’s entirely arguable which one here deserves top-billing. If we’re going by news-stories and media attention alone, then it’s undoubtedly No Man’s Sky.
Having struggled through tough development and silly lawsuits, the ambitious space exploration sim finally releases this month on PS4 and PC. It’s going to be interesting to see if it’s vague promises live up to the expectation that people have built up around it. While Hello Games never made any grandiose promises like Peter “I can’t stop lying” Molyneux, I think people have made up their own fantasies about what NMS is. Not long now!

The other game that ought to have taken top billing is Adam Jensen’s second outing – Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. While the music and aesthetic are just as good as Human Revolution, Mankind Divided hasn’t had the kind of media push and trailer that made HR so wanted. The only thing I can remember about MD’s media push was some crap about “Augment your pre-order” which did not go down well at all!
Regardless, I am looking forward to this. Human Revolution was a fantastic entry in the series, keeping a lot of what made the original great and adding a lot of modern gameplay and gold shine to everything. Mankind Divided will hopefully follow in the same footsteps (and not take an Invisible War nosedive)

Koei continues expanding its horizons and bringing more anime to game form, this time with the shockingly popular Attack on Titan. The gameplay looks great and the game looks pretty spot on with the anime. It’ll be interesting to see if the game holds up for how ever many hours it lasts, since there isn’t really all that much variance to the Titans.

People love Telltale games (I say people since I’ve never really gotten on with them) and people love Batman. Well they’re coming together for episode one of Telltale’s Batman series.

King of Fighter’s XIV comes out on PS4 this month. There’s a demo so you can check it out. The gameplay feels kind of like KOF, but it also reminds me a lot of SFxTekken with its auto-combos. It’s not the best looking beat’em’up, but it does have a ton of characters on launch (rather than drip-feeding or charging for them!). If you’re here just for Mai Shiarnui, note that she’s coming to Dead or Alive 5 next month. A series that seems oddly made for her.

Resident Evil 4 HD releases on Ps4 and Xbone as it tries to come out on every platform ever. The PS1 version will be out next month…not really. It hardly matters as no version will ever look as good as the one being cooked up at RE4HD.com. The effort going into remastering the textures and 3D are beyond real. The video below is from the modded RE4HD, not capcom’s half-hearted release.
