The Gaming Month Ahead – April 2016

DS3This month’s big title is Dark Souls 3. I’ve never really gotten on with Dark Souls – the focus on melee combat and countering along with numerous minor niggles always made me prefer playing Demon’s Souls. But DS3 looks like it’s adding a lot of what made Demon’s a lot more varied – spells and archery appear to be back. The endurance based gameplay looks as tough as always, though only time will tell if this manages to satisfy fans of the various Souls series games.

The Ratchet and Clank reboot is out this month too. Coming out excursively on PS4, the game looks absolutely gorgeous. Supposedly the game is meant to tie in closely with the CG movie being made and from what we’ve seen, the game looks good enough to be a CG movie in its own right. Here’s hoping for a game as good as Ratchet and Clank 2 or Crack in Time. I don’t expect many surprises from the story, but hopefully Insomniac can squeeze in some nice gameplay surprises.

Quantum Break, the previously Xbone exclusive title, comes out on Xbone and PC early in the month. Though the fact that it will release through Windows App Store will likely influence a lot of purchasing decsions. The game looks very nice (even if they could/should have picked a better looking lead character) and it’ll be interesting to see how the whole live action, time bending mechanics come into play. I’m imagining the game will end up being similar to Remember Me – aesthetically pleasing, some interesting sections and mechanics, but gameplay that doesn’t really stand out in its genre (FYI, I really liked Remember Me, but then I really like melee brawlers)

Star Fox Zero releases toward the end of the month exclusively for WiiU. Co-developed by Platinum and Nintendo, Star Fox Zero…looks like an on rails flight shooter game? I’ve never played a Star Fox, but it looks like this one is continuing in the same vein as previous games in the series. The fact that it’s co-developed by Platinum will please many as they always bring an edge of arcade perfection to their titles (even if story and character aren’t always perfect)

As a final note I just want to say that writing the upcoming months release list has become increasingly difficult when I seem to no longer purchase games as they are released. Back when I was primarily a console gamer, I would pick up new releases frequently. Now, as a mostly PC gamer the need to buy things on release doesn’t seem to have the same hold on me. This is partially out of expectation that no PC game should cost above £30 on digital, despite publishers like Koei Tecmo trying to release games on steam for £50. I’m now usually quite happy to wait for a price drop while playing old games like Daggerfall or playing modded campaigns in Fallout Vegas.
