The Gaming Month Ahead – February 2016

Now we’re well into the new year we start to get some of the bigger titles. The month’s biggest release is most certainly Street Fighter V. While with a quick glance it might look like small changes since Street Fighter IV, there’s a lot going on here that help make the gameplay and graphics fresh and exciting again. While Capcom promise that there won’t be millions of championship, super or arcade editions, the amount of characters planned for release as DLC seems like it could add up to a lot. Also, while the game will ship with a fairly standard arcade mode, Capcom promise a proper story mode in the future; one that will hopefully feel more like the recent Mortal Kombat story modes.

The other big title is a PC exclusive, XCOM 2. It is quite surprising that they decided not to go multi-platform; I always figured Enemy Unknown did quite well on consoles, but hopefully this should allow the game to take full advantage of the platform and have a UI more suited to the genre. As well as adding full mod support, there’s a wholesale changes to the mechanics of the game. This time round you’re invading rather than defending, invading a planet that had been taken over by the alien threat.

Koei releases its game adaptation of the novel turned anime – Arslan: Warriors of Legend, using its patented Warriors gameplay in the medieval setting to great effect. Much like the Gundam Warriors series, the game takes on a very anime art style and puts the player on the battlefield. There seems like elements of Bladestorm or Kessen 3 in the game, allowing the player to control the scores of allied soldiers around them to trigger special skills.

Far Cry’s next spin off might not seem as over the top as Blood Dragon’s homage to the eighties, but it’s certainly as inventive with its engine. Far Cry Primal takes place in the stone age and offers all the variety of stone age weaponry – axes, bows, spears and lobbed things. Where it really differs from the main game though is the animal companions. As well as buddy animals like wolves to help you, you get owls to help tag and attack enemies from above. I just hope it has a sense of humour beyond having your wolf buddy pee everywhere.
