The Gaming Month Ahead – December 2015

Xenoblade

It’s almost Christmas. Though retail releases look quite barren, there’s still some real strong titles this month in the run up to the new year.

The month starts with an open world bang. Just Cause 3 releases on PC, PS4 and Xbone. Become Rico once more and go nuts on another island of 400 square miles of chaos. Just Cause 3 continues to focus on open world mayhem and emergent gameplay rather than a compelling narrative. On the same day Rainbow Six Siege comes out on the same platforms. R6 Siege focuses on mulitplayer and siege style operations. From early impressions I think a lot of people are disappointed that it eschewed the great single player campaigns of R6 Vegas 1 and 2. The cancelled Patriots seemed to be offering an even deeper single player with its The Rock style story, so its doubly disappointing that Siege has gone the other way.

PC gets a fairly quick port of Dragon Quest Heroes, which was only released a few months ago on console. The Dynasty Warriors style Dragon Quest game did quite well critically, blending the warriors gameplay into a more arpg style. The other console port to PC has taken a lot longer. Lightning Returns Final Fantasy XIII was supposed to release back in January. Technical issues with the port delayed it a fairly hefty twelve months. Hopefully it won’t suffer the teething problems of FFXIII, which initially didn’t allow high resolutions or 60fps. The issues were handled better with FFXIII-2, so hopefully that trend will continue here.

WiiU gets a flagship title in the form of Xenoblade Chronicles X. The spiritual successor to Wii’s highly acclaimed Xenoblade Chronicles, Chronicles X follows a similar trend of open world JRPG combat, though with a customisable avatar this time around.

Well, that’s it. I’ll be back before the end of the year with some random best/worst lists. Here’s the full release list for the month.
