The Gaming Month Ahead – November 2015

November seems to have lost some of its lustre ever since publishers started to try and avoid the same month slot as Call of Duty occupied. The majority of this month is filled with trash Hello Kitty, Kung Fu Panda type games for last gen and Nintendo platforms. That’s not to say big things aren’t out this month too – biggest among them being Fallout 4. Revealed under a year ago, Fallout 4 takes us back into Bethesda’s wasteland once more. Here’s hoping the game can retain some of the excellent RPG elements that Obsidian brought to Fallout 3 in New Vegas – while introducing all the new mechanics. I already spent far too many hours with Fallout 3 and NV – so I’m personally a little frightened about what properly customisable homes means. Skyrim had a little bit of that in the Hearthfire DLC, but this seems to be going even farther forward with it.

Persona 4 Dancing all Night brings the love to the Vita. The title returns to Inaba and takes the Persona 4 cast on a new adventure, this time in a rhythm based game. The presentation looks fabulous and the title oozes confidence. The story picks up after the events of Persona 4 Golden and has the full returning cast as well as new characters made for this title.

Rise of the Tomb Raider comes out around the middle of the month. This dumbly titled adventure continues the marmite adventures of the new Lara Croft, initially only on Xbone and X360. While it promises to even the mix between action and adventure – it still looks more like a cinematic shooter compared to the older Tomb Raider Titles. But if you liked the 2013 reboot, then you’ll probably get on with this.

Steam’s ambitious new controller also comes out properly this month. Replacing analog sticks with haptic-feedback touch pads is a bold move and opinions seem divided on how good they are at replacing traditional controllers or mouse and keyboard. I think the important thing to remember is that the controllers will work with every game – the game simply needs to be on steam or run through steam as an external application. Steam then handles the controller mapping and the touch pad allows for better emulation of a mouse than an analog stick would allow. Interestingly, the Steam Controller also has a gyroscope and accelerometers like the DualShock 4. The Steam controller is out on the same day as Fallout 4 and can be bought through steam directly or from GAME and at £40 they’re about the same price as the other current gen controllers.

Oh – there’s a Need For Speed and Call of Duty something or other. 🙂
