The Gaming Month Ahead – September 2015

Wow, it must be getting near the busy period – there’s no remasters out this month. There’s two ports, with Tearaway Unfolded coming to PS4 and Broken Sword 5: The Serpent’s Curse coming out on PS4 and Xbone.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is undoubtedly this months biggest title and it comes out on the first day of the month. Kojima’s final game working for the evil Konami overlords sees the series that started in 1987 with Metal Gear (though one that didn’t hit it big until Metal Gear Solid more than 10 years later) and a game that completes the circle. Metal Gear hasn’t really ever been a straightforward series, and MGSV takes place after MGS3 and Peacewalker and just before the original 1987 Metal Gear. Ground Zeroes introduced and demonstrated the open world approach MGSV is taking with stealth. There are moments that feel akin to the larger areas of MGS4 – but everything here works together in a fluid open system.

Releasing at the same time is Mad Max. From all accounts it seems a solid open world action title – its release date and the reputation of movie-based games are the only real things working against it. Here’s hoping they use some of the music from Fury Road. Oh, and hopefully they don’t overuse such great phrases as ‘Mediocre!’ and ‘Witness!’

Destiny’s third ‘expansion’, The Taken King, releases halfway through this month. Along with ‘new’ content, it also changes a lot of the basics of the game. The ill-fated Light-Levelling system is being overhauled by a more traditional levelling system and new cap of 40. The Light-Level in now instead a value given to all equipment and a way of measuring the strength of your loadout. It’ll be interesting to see how many people, a year on, are willing to pay to continue their adventure. Also of note is the replacement of Dinklebot with Nolan North across the entire game. Hopefully they revisited the script as well.
Nobunaga’s Ambition finally finds its way west and with a hefty subtitle too: Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence – and it manages to release on PC and PS4. The long running strategy game from Koei has a grand tradition and the latest entry looks pretty and detailed. Just because it’s Koei, don’t expect Samurai Warriors – Kessen 3 was the closest mix between the two. Nobunaga’s Ambition is very much a Japanese created Total War: Shogun 2 (though the series predates Total War)

Sword Coast Legends returns to the Forgotten Realms, specifically the Sword Coast region I imagine, and offers a different style of computer Dungeons & Dragons. Though the game can be played solo, it’s designed to be played multiplayer with one player playing dungeon master, and the others playing the heroes. Much like Neverwinter Night’s MP, it offers the ability to create new maps and adventures.

Also worthy of note – FIFA 16 this year is including women at long last.
