The Gaming Month Ahead – August 2015

So what’s coming out this month that will be an excuse to stay in doors and avoid the (possibly) blistering sunshine of the UK? Not much, but perhaps just enough. Early on in the month we get Everybody’s Gone To The Rapture on PS4 title that follows up The Chinese Room’s work on Dear Esther on PC. It’s a story driven, first person walkabout game that looks quite pretty in its CryEngine dress.

Arrowhead’s remake of classic 4-player dungeon crawl Gauntlet comes to PS4 as well with a snazzy new subtitle – slayer edition. This version of the game includes new modes, new class based mechanics and just a whole lot of polish. PC players can also look forward to a free update that aims to bring a lot of these neat additions back home. On the same page, Arrowhead are also releasing the Masters of the Galaxy expansion for Helldivers. The Super-Earth Ultimate Edition of Helldivers also releases at retail and includes the original game on disc, the PS3 and Vita versions on digital and the expansion for all.

A month wouldn’t be complete without remasters from yestergen, and so this month we get Risen 3 on PS4 and more importantly Dishonored: Definitive Edition on PS4 and Xbone. Dishonored was a fantastic title and has some of the best DLC. If you never played the DLC then this is a great time to give it a shot. There seems to be very little information about what the game offers aside from the DLC, resolution, texture and framerate improvements. Guessing from how little news there’s been, probably little else. Gears of War also gets an ultimate edition, releasing on PC and XBone, with a full set of bells and whistles. It’s a bit disappointing that they didn’t just release a Marcus Fenix edition and packed all three games in. As good as the multiplayer was, this is still a very short game.

Itagaki’s magnificent octupus also releases this month. The game has been in development since 2009 and had huge expectation following the developer’s previous work on Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2 and his smack talk against Hayashi, who took over work on the Ninja Gaiden Sigma ports. So far impressions point to this being a steaming pile of WiiU exclusive poop. In fact it doesn’t even manage to be exclusive as, for some reason, the online portion is being released as a F2P title on PC.

Releasing towards the tailend of the month is the surprising release of Onichanbara Z2: Chaos. The Onichanbara series doesn’t get many western releases. It is, after all, a very Japanese game about bikini-clad women fighting zombies and the undead. Still don’t let that get in your way, that is if you’re looking for fairly middle of the road hack and slash action.

Oh and Rare Replay is out this month too. I have no connection with any old Rare title, so forgive my lack of excitement about all of them (minus Goldeneye for licencing reasons) being bundled into one package for the Xbone.
