The Gaming Month Ahead – June 2015

I’m sure many people are still playing Witcher 3, but that doesn’t stop a new month coming around with a bunch of flashy new games to buy. Arkham Knight takes top billing this month – and no doubt lots of people will be feverishly trying to finish Witcher 3 in time to jump back into the black boots of the caped crusader.

Arkham Knight returns the series back to the stable hands of Rocksteady, after a brief prologue detour via the good, but buggy Batman: Arkham Oranges. Arkham Knight looks even more packed for of stuff that Arkham City, promising a larger and more varied playing field, dual character control for combat, a fully controllable batmobile/tank and probably stupid amounts of riddler challenges, secreted in every possible orifice of the gameworld.

Elsewhere the trend of remasters continues with Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition. Releasing on 8th gen and PC, DMC 4 uses the original PC release as a base (which included 1080/60 with better textures and more enemies than the original console release) the Special Edition adds more playable characters, adding Vergil, Lady and Trish. It would be nice if something could be done about the campaign repeating all the levels after the half way point, and making you fight the same bosses multiple times, but that would probably be messing with the game too much.

SWERY (of Deadly Premonition fame) is releasing his previously Xbone exclusive D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die on PC. The quirky adventure title didn’t do to well after it plopped onto Xbox Live. It’s Kinect dependency was removed quite quickly after Microsoft made the device an optional extra for the beleaguered console. A PC release for the niche title seemed like a no-brainer at that point – and so it finally comes out on steam this month.

The Elder Scrolls Online also comes to 8th gen consoles this month. It recently dropped its subscription based model, shifting to the one-off purchase with micro-transactions that games like Guild Wars 2 have used successfully in the past. It’s hard to know what to make of Elder Scrolls Online. I’ve heard good and bad things about it. At worst it looks like generic MMORPG, but it’s surely going to be hard to get people to fork over the initial payment to start playing it.

And the month wouldn’t be complete without a Koei Tecmo release. Samurai Warriors 3 chronicles comes out on Vita and 3DS. Using the recent Samurai Warriors 4 gameplay as a base, Chronicles 3 adds many empires and Xtreme legends style gameplay elements to make the story and gamepath feel fresh.
