The Gaming Month Ahead – December 2014

It’s almost December – and that means its Christmas time. It also means that there now won’t be many new releases until a few months into the new year. It doesn’t mean there none – just far fewer than the rest of the year. Last year wasn’t actually all that bad – Gran Turismo 6, Bravely Default, Spartan Assault and Broken Sword 5 all launched in December. This year is far slimmer. First up, as has become quite familiar this year in particular, we have two HD ports. Kingdom Hearts 2.5 takes the original Kingdom Hearts 2, packages it with Birth by Sleep, the video recap RE:Coded, and pops it all into widescreen and higher resolution on the PS3. Final Fantasy XIII-2 also releases on PC – Square, having listened to complaints about FFXIII’s release on PC have included a resolution selector, allowing the game to exceed 720p without having to resort to Durante’s GeDoSaTo tool. Square have also promised a patch for FFXIII that will allow the same. Speaking of patches, Ultra Street Fighter 4 gets an update in the latter half of the month that adds edition selection online (allowing you to play characters like the OP Sagat of SF4), new trials for select characters and Omega Mode, which throws balance out of the window in favour of fun.

This month also has the much-anticipated Destiny expansion, The Dark Below. Anticipated, mostly because people have run those five existing strikes and one raid into the ground. Everyone is going to be watching the Dark Below closely, wondering if Bungie can indeed provide the kind of boost of longevity the game needs. Outside of the Crucible PvP, the game can quickly start to feel stale and its questionable if a few strikes and another raid will be enough to keep people playing.

The Crew is releasing early this month. It’s had a fair number of open and closed beta’s in recent weeks, so many of you will already have an opinion. It sounds mostly like it’s trying to be the MMO version of Burnout Paradise or any of the recent Criterion Need for Speed’s. Elsewhere Game of Thrones: A Telltales Games Series Episode 1: Iron From Ice is due out this month, but no concrete date seems to be set. It’s coming to PC, PS4, PS3, Xbone and X360. Telltale’s take on the fantasy setting goes for their usual story based approach, following the little mentioned House Forrester and takes place sometime around the fourth season of the TV series.

As ever this time is rife with sales. Black Friday is just about over, but there will be lots of price slashes in the countdown to Christmas and beyond. PSN and XBLA have have had pretty good sales in previous years, nothing on the level of Steam, but good nonetheless. Whatever you buy, have a Merry Christmas and have a great New Year.
