The Gaming Month Ahead – November 2014

November – as ever the biggest month for games, and for the last few years the month of COD as Assassin’s Creed. When the dust clears the 7th gen will be mostly remembered for the iterative releases of Call of Duty and Assassin’s Creed. I wonder if their legacy will continue as strongly into the 8th gen. Regardless of those two, this month has some pretty big games all round.

Exclusives wise XBone and WiiU both build on their strong exclusives from October this month with The Master Chief Collection on Xbone and Super Smash Brothers on WiiU. Master Chief Collection continues to astound with its value – Halo 1,2,3 and 4 are all included, along with all their multiplayer maps and modes, with the first two titles remastered entirely. It’s a strong package and much like Halo: CE did for the original Xbox, this is sure to tempt a lot of fence sitters to buy an Xbone this Christmas.

For me the big title this month is Dragon Age: Inquisition. There’s still big question marks over whether Bioware have learnt from their mistakes with Dragon Age 2. The inclusion of muliplayer co-op certainly raises more questions that it answers, but Bioware’s track record is enough to give them the benefit of the doubt. They may not craft adventures as deep and awesome as Baldur’s Gate 2 anymore, but just equalling Dragon Age: Origin’s depth would be great. From the trailers, everything looks set to please; we’ll just have to play it and find out (or trust reviews if that’s your thing) It’s quite lucky for Dragon Age that the two biggest RPG’s that would have competed with it for Christmas sales have been pushed into next year. Both The Witcher 3 and Pillars of Eternity are arguably better poised to deliver. Additionally if you are thinking of getting Inquisition, don’t forget to give the Dragon Age Keep open beta a spin. It’s a web application that lets you set the world history if Thedas for Inquisition. To alleviate the problem of porting saves from 6th gen to 7th gen consoles, BioWare have opted to create an external tool that lets you tailor the world to your like.  It’s a great idea and saves some people from having to play through Dragon Age 2 (which had a great characters, but was a little weak on gameplay).

PC as usual has a ton of games, both by big developers and lots of indies. Following the steps of other console devs, SEGA’s Valkyria Chronicles makes it onto PC. It comes at a budget price and with all DLC included. If PC proves to be successful for such a venture, perhaps SEGA will consider releasing more of their older titles to the platform. SEGA also releases Football Manager 2015 and DLC for Company of Heroes 2. Come to think of it, SEGA is having a busy old month. Persona 4 gets a brace of spin offs this month too. Persona 4: Arena Ultimax comes to PS3 and X360, the sequel of Persona 4 Arena, it continues the story of the Persona 3 and 4 protagonists during golden week. 3DS gets Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth. A chibi dungeon crawler variation on Persona 4. SEGA is also releasing Hatsune Miku Project Diva F 2nd for Vita and PS3.

Let’s not forget Far Cry 4. It’s hard to talk about Far Cry 4 – based on the awesomeness of Far Cry 3, it’s almsot a foregone conclusion that FC4 should be brilliant. It’s got drop in co-op and elephants after all!
