The Gaming Month Ahead – October 2014

UPDATE: 08/10/14

Added a few titles that weren’t on the release list. It’s mostly some high profile PC titles like Legend of Grimrock 2. The first title came out a while back and managed to make what was old, new again – bringing the gameplay of classic titles like Eye of the Beholder and marrying it to some very sweet and atmospheric dungeons. Much like EOTB2, Grimrock 2 also takes a leap outdoors, providing more variety in locations and monsters. Legend of Korra also sees its release this month – Steam has it down for the 21st. It’s also coming out on PSN and XBLA, and though I couldn’t find anything confirming dates on console, I think it’s safe to assume it’ll be released at the same time across all platforms. Legend of Korra brings Platinum’s brand of third person action to the Avatar universe, bridging the third and fourth book’s of the TV show.  Dreamfall Chapters, the long awaited sequel to The Longest Journey and Dreamfall, also comes to PC this month, along with a spiffing port of Final Fantasy XIII. FFXIII comes as the first of the trilogy which are all slated to come out months of each other on Steam.

ORIGINAL POST:

It’s October and there’s a load of games coming out. I don’t know what your must-haves for the month are going to be, but I can tell you top of my list – Samurai Warriors 4! The Japanese flavoured cousin to the Dynasty Warriors games makes a return to PlayStation after skipping the whole of the 7th gen in lieu of a lackluster performance on Wii. Samurai Warriors 4 should feel quite fresh to the majority of its audience, the story focuses on the unification of Japan and a lot of the gameplay details have been built up from the chronicles series on DS and the third game on Wii.

A number of games coming out this month were also covered in my report on EGX a few days back. Shadow of Mordor, which comes out right at the start of the month was hailed as a must-buy for anyone who enjoys their third person action games. Alien Isolation received less positive feedback – somewhat lacking the feeling of dread you’d expect from an Aliens title that is focused on horror. Evil Within I’m tempted to just say outright avoid – it had a terrible showing at EGX, but if you were interested in it, I’d say wait for reviews and maybe the performance and presentation may have been improved for the release code. The game is certainly not quite the return to form for Survival Horror many were hoping though.

All platforms seem to have at least one big title out this month. 7th gen’s big title for the month is Borderlands The Pre-Sequel. PS4 finally sees the release of DriveClub. Xbone’s great hope, Sunset Overdrive comes out at the end of the month. From the makers of Spyro, Ratchet and Clank, and FUSE; Sunset promises fun and arcady action with lots of colour. The game has a very Dreamcast vibe to it (lots of colour, arcade feel and an emphasis on moment to moment gameplay) and is one of the few exlusives MS are going to be banking on, going into the christmas rush.
WiiU gets Bayonetta 2 and the original remade – it hasn’t exactly been selling lots in Japan, but for some reason Platinum Games don’t ever seem to. Bayonetta gets a lot of respect in the west, but its success will be tied closely to the failing fortunes of Nintendo’s console.  3DS had Super Smash Bros., the Vita gets Freedom Wars, and PC has Sid Meier’s Civilization breaking atmosphere and plunging into space for Beyond Earth.

Like I said, it’s a big month with a lot coming out – but it is spread over the platforms, so there’s a good chance there will only be one or two games to interest each person. Samurai Warriors 4 and Shadow of Mordor are two that I will definitely buy, but Freedom Wars is another title that I’m keeping my eyes on.
