The Gaming Month Ahead – September 2014

Destiny. For most console people that will pretty much sum up this month. There’s a fair lot of other titles coming out this month too, but the biggest is undoubtedly Bungie’s first game after leaving Microsoft and Halo behind. Destiny has a lineage that is clearly derived from the Halo series, but in structure it follows a more Defiance (or general MMO) model. It’ll be interesting to see how well the friend-only 6 man raids work. Hopefully DPD members will be able to organise into successful teams.Destiny is also Activision’s big, long-term gamble to replace the success of Call of Duty. COD is hardly going away, but its numbers have been dwindling, and as it tries to be more like Titanfall or Halo with lots of sci-fi elements, it will probably continue to hemorrhage  its user base.

Although PC doesn’t get Destiny (for no good reason that I’ve seen) it does get Sims 4 this month. While Maxis have peeled back a lot of the functionality of previous Sims titles (there’s no swimming pools!) Sims 4 does boast the best UI of the series, making it easier than ever to create your character, give them a personality and model your home as you see fit. The character creator (arguably one of the most fun bits of the game) is actually available as a demo download from Origin. While you’re restricted to only making young adults (not teens, kids or old folks) it’s still pretty fun to mess around with and shows the power of the new UI.

FIFA 15 comes out at the end of the month on most platforms. PS2 and Wii U support is dropped at the same time strangely enough. Wii U may not be getting much this month (or ever really) but it does get the Dynasty Warriors/Zelda mashup, Hyrule Warriors. Similar to One Piece: Pirate Warriors and Dynasty Warriors: Gundam, Hyrule Warriors takes the well known (to nintendo fans) character of the Zelda series and plops them into the massive brawls of the Warriors series.

Warriors Orochi 3 Ultimate comes out on PS4 and XBone this month too. It’s pretty much the same game that was released on 7th gen, but with improved graphics and extra characters. The originally Wii-U bonus characters are joined by Sophitia from Soul Calibur, Kasumi from Dead or Alive  and a few others.
