The Gaming Month Ahead – July 2014

on

July – the quietest of gaming months. It’s not always a bad thing, especially as many PC gamers are still recovering after the steam sale of june. It’s perhaps ironic then that the major release this month is a PC title. Divinity: Original Sin breaks out from its kickstarted early access to a full release. The sixth title in Larian’s genre spanning Divinity series returns to a top down RPG format, but with enough originality about it to escape the shroud of false nostalgia that has plagued many other kickstarted games. Original Sin features an entirely co-op campaign that allows player characters to argue amongst one another and partake in turn based battles in a real time world. Yes, as confusing as that sounds, the turn based element only kicks in during battles, which means if the second player (or other character if you’re playing solo) is not directly involved in the melee, they are free to wander around in real time. Being a PC game, Original Sin also comes with full mod and steamworks support.

Elsewhere Dynasty Warriors: Gundam Reborn releases just before the start of the month. Technically it’s in June, but it’s release date was announced after I’d posted June’s release list. Exclusive to PS3, Gundam Reborn sees a return to the more realistic look of the first two games, rather than the more cell-shaded look of Gundam Warriors 3. It also marks a return of space combat and features over 120 playable suits. While it released on Vita as well in Japan, I can find no evidence that the Vita version is being localised (sad face here)

PS4 gets some remastered love from Abe’s Oddysee New ‘n’ Tasty, and The Last of Us remastered.  New ‘n’ Tasty looks to be a complete remake, resembling the kind of changes in Resident Evil on Wii than a simple graphical upgrade like Halo Anniversary. The Last of Us conversely is a simple graphical upgrade, much like setting your game from Low to Ultra High on PC. It’s hard to imagine many will double dip with The Last of Us, but for those who came from X360 to PS4 – it’s a great opportunity to play a game many consider to be one of PS3’s finest.
