The Gaming Month Ahead – June 2014

It’s June again. Looking back on last year’s June line up, I can’t help but feel that this month feels somewhat lackluster. Last year we had games like Remember Me, Last of Us, Animal Crossing, New Super Luigi U and State of Decay. All top titles spread over the different platforms. This year? B-Movie investigation adventure game Murdered: Soul Suspect and 8th gen console exclusive EA Sports UFC (which does look the part). It’s definitely a step down for consoles. PC fares better; Wasteland 2 (possibly) gets a retail release at the end of the month. It’s been on Steam’s early access for a while, and its slated to be released proper at the end of the month. Wasteland 2 is the follow-up to what was a precursor to the original Fallout games. Wasteland 2 was famously kickstarted a while back and has since gone through Steam’s Early Access.

PC also gets Wildstar, NCSoft’s next big MMO this month (already out if you pre-ordered). I would best described it as Guild Wars by way of Ratchet and Clank. It’s got a lot more character, colour and arcade action than your average MMO. The subscription model may put people off, but they seem to have introudced to a rather strange play to pay system. Where you can spend ingame gold to buy game time. How well it works is anyone’s guess at the moment, but its good to see different avenues being explored to the traditional subscription or microtransaction models.
