The Gaming Month Ahead – November 2013

So, November 2013. The next-gen consoles are nearly here. Can you feel the excitement? no? it’s there somewhere, you just have to dig around a little. Considering that it’s pretty much a world wide release for both consoles, there’s a surprising amount of titles for them. The only real let down is the amount of familiar titles and series iterations coming out. It’s hard to get too excited about titles like Assassin’s Creed IV, Call of Duty, Battlefield 4 or Need for Speed: Rivals, when they’re all on current gen machines as well – and out earlier in most cases. But if you’re going in a new user, or someone who doesn’t buy things as soon as they’re out then both consoles have launch line-ups that easily overshadow previous launches.

PlayStation 4 is also quite markedly missing any Japanese titles that have so helped define its games library in years gone by. Games like Ridge Racer, Dynasty Warriors, Virtua Fighter or Tekken won’t be coming out until the console launches in Japan early next year. But where the PlayStation 4 really wins out is the staggering amount of PSN titles. Classic re-releases like Flower are backed up by interesting new IP like Contrast and Resogun. PC free to play titles like DC Universe Online and Warframe offer games ready to play right away without having to spend too much beyond the price of the console.
Microsoft has strengthened their exclusive launch line up by strangling the last few months of the 360. Pushing games like Ryse and Forza onto the Xbone at the expense of their more popular hardware. Still Dead Rising 3, Ryse, Forza and Killer Instinct make up a strong exclusive line up – which might be enough to ignore the higher price point,  a slight power disadvantage, and troubling rumours about the rushed OS in place on the hardware. In all likelihood, Microsoft will be betting on brand loyalty to help them through the early days of the transition.

As for current gen, November brings another round of Call of Duty vs Battlefield – as they compete in who can have the more bland single player campaign and addictive multiplayer. Assassin’s Creed IV tries to make up for the boredom that was Assassin’s Creed 3. Pirates are certainly bound to be more fun than a mixed race native american wandering about a bland early american landscape, searching for a personality. XCOM returns with an expansion XCOM: Enemy Within, adding new maps, enemies, weapons and all that jazz to the original. There’s a lot more smaller titles throughout the month, including a HD release of the DS Castlevania title, Mirror of Fate, on PS3 and X360. The title bridges the story between Lords of Shadow 1 and it’s sequel that’s due early next year. LEGO fans get another fairly inoffensive trudge through a random IP decorated LEGO world – this time in Marvel dressing in LEGO Marvel Super Heroes. And last year’s mixed Baldur’s Gate 1 ‘enhancement’ (read patched for widescreen and touch controls with a few random mods attached, and the inability to add any mods of your own) is followed this year by Baldur’s Gate 2 Enhanced Edition. Honestly, I would advise just picking up the classic version on Good Old Games and modding it yourself.

The release list is a little mixed up this month. We start with the last days of October – because I missed ACIV off last month’s. The PS4 and XBone launch line-ups have been listed at the end, separate to the general clutter.
