The Gaming Month Ahead – September 2013

Not as many games this September as I thought there might be. I’m guessing this is partially because new consoles are coming out this winter, and mostly because most other games are quaking in their boots and giving a wide berth to GTAV. Yes, Grand Theft Auto V is out this month – ready to dazzle and please and let you play out your violent, criminal fantasies (you sickos!) There’s not much that needs to be said, though if you don’t want to know the ending, look away now…they’re all lizards disguised as humans, trying to steal earth’s resources!

There are still a few heavy hitters out this month. Total War Rome 2 comes out safely on PC, away from the console GTAV madness. Rome 2 features better combined naval and land battles as well as more detailed siege mechanics. PC also gets ARMA 3 – the overly realistic military shooter. Consoles finally get Diablo 3 – and while PC owners may not have been entirely satisfied with its online drm, auction house and undelivered PvP, I think it offers something quite unique to consoles – which is to say a good four player (local and online) action RPG. Something that hasn’t really been around since Champions of Norath or Hunter the Reckoning last generation. Dead or Alive 5 gets updated to Ultimate Edition, adding extra characters, 2v2 online play, more stages and hopefully better network code. The PS3 also gets a free2play version of the game that starts with four characters and allows you to buy the characters you want, rather than paying full price for everyone. Then there’s Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5, which brings the original Kingdom Hearts and Chains of Memories up to date, with HD visuals, trophies and in widescreen.

And of course the footballing duo come out in the usual order. PES2014 comes out a week before FIFA14, so you can buy it, check it out, then trade it in the following week for FIFA. Seriously though, PES2014 does boast an overhauled engine and even the developers claim their in just as much danger of losing fans as gaining new ones. There should be a demo a week before it comes it out though – which should give you a chance to compare it to FIFA and see if they’ve made any progress catching the current cup holders.
