When it Comes to Shooters… Nobody Does it Better!

After 13 long years, millions of requests and frantic legal battles, the game that redefined console FPS is staging a comeback! All together now: “The name’s Bond…”

Today, a leaked Activision memo gave us the news that legendary shooter GoldenEye 007 (better known as GoldenEye 64) is getting a revamp! The memo came complete with proposed boxart, a sample of which is shown above, as well as shots of some HIGHLY desireable accessories…

Above is the snazzy-looking gold classic controller (thankfully suggesting the game will be going down the traditionally controlled route), and below is the infamous Golden Gun, reimagined as a Wii Zapper (suggesting that Wii-style controls will still be optional for those who swing that way). To top it all off, we have this salacious soundbite straight from the horse’s mouth:

“GoldenEye for the Nintendo 64 was a game that defined a genre.  Now, after 13 years of gaming innovation, the legend is re-imagined.  Developed from the ground up for the Wii, GoldenEye takes advantage of the latest technology to deliver the same intense experience with today’s graphics and physics.  Play a modernized version of the classic story with the new Bond (Daniel Craig), more lethal and cunning than ever as you take on missions around the world.  Relive all the legendary moments from the original game: St Petersburg, the Caribbean and numerous other levels.  Leverage the classic arsenal of weapons and gadgets as you fight Onatopp, Trevelyan and their adversaries, from the classic PP7 to the high tech assault rifle, sniper rifles and even the tank.  The enhanced multiplayer experience offers 4 player split-screen like the original and introduces 8 player online matches.  GoldenEye is 13 years better, are you?”

Development of the game is being split between 2 parties – Eurocom (The World is Not Enough, Dead Space: Extraction) and n-Space (developers of the criminally under-rated Geist), and the game is to be officially unveiled at E3 with a planned November release date! So, what say you? Is the game Dam-ned from the start? Just another disappointment for the Wii’s “Library”, or will you be dancing in the “Streets”, Cradle-ing your copy at launch?

See what I did there? Oh-ho-ho-ho…

The Wii is given a reason to not be used as a massive white coaster any more!

All very good and well, but it’s not being handled by anyone who had anything to do with the original. Even if it were I fail to see how a game this old is relevant at all anymore, other than dredging up rose-tinted memories.

You make a good point Val, and I have to admit the new developers worry me somewhat (they’ve been behind some stinkers). Plus, there are still loads of rights issues which I’m sure will cause problems for the more nostalgic of us. Activision owns the Bond license, sure, but surely Rare still own copyright on the level designs and some of the weaponry…

Bang! On rails shooter featuring Bond and his gadgets. Heard it here first.

Gun looks ok but it is a gun that is gold (in places), which wasnt the OG Golden gun as this had a lighter somewhere and clicked together like a meccano set, they should have thought about that as an attachment, it would be an attachment that breaks down into more attachments, for the attachment.

Anyway Rare has got enough work to do…. wheres my Arcade version of Killer Instinct (SNES NOT N64 GOLD DROSS!) with awesome redrawn graphics and backgrounds! And all for 80pts please!

Can’t argue with the killer instinct request. I’ll take an arcade port over a snes port though. Fingers crossed, they have been teasing it for years.
